The long, run on sentences where it constantly tells us "Altman shot three of this kind, four of that kind, one of this one and stopped to reload" before doing a rinse-repeat, however.

I must confess though that in the beginning it was a little slow for me, mostly because I like it better when the main events of a book start right away, but with this book there needed to be a slow start so that you could get to know Altman as a human being and relate to him or at least connect in a way that you could almost experience his journey as your own.

It is revealed near the end of the book that the hallucinations are "not a function of the Marker but of something else that stood in opposition to it, of something that was ingrained in [Altman's] own brain". Underwhelming, poorly written, macabre filler that sullies the Dead Space lore with unnecessary and contradictory exposition. Ron Hubbard madman you might think but just a scientist who discovers the Marker buried in the Chicxulub crater (an amusing bit of irony there) and tries to warn the world about its true nature before evil scientists shut him down. Evenson's done a super job with Dead Space and has done a very compelling interesting book and the carnage doesn't even start for quite a while (and I kinda preferred it this way) - great job Evenson! However this theory still couldn't explain why the damn Marker reanimated dead tissue and what the hell is Convergence.It's as though The Andromeda Strain, Phase 4, and John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness had some unholy baby and this is it. When he arrives home, he talks with his girlfriend, Ada Chavez, an anthropologist working in Chicxulub, and tells her about his day. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Honestly, with all the issues I have with this book, I was tempted to rate it even lower; what stopped me is a little story I made up in my own head. He brings some people back including his mother and they all see with horrific shock the creature on the beach.

With the media all around the world fascinated by his claims, many in awe, others skeptical, of the vidlog showing an immense alien artifact under study, Markoff is enraged and wants to "stamp out" the threat of Altman right away.Then some of the scientists working on it start taking samples and trying to replicate the thing - and the weird fleshy mess that surrounded it - and inadvertently create a plague of undead murder-machines.
