About this deal

My only worry is that some people might think that this lens is representative of all classical lenses. The movements between all the lens elements are annoying but it doesn't take away from the experience too much. especially wide open, but it still can produce some very nice detail at the right f-stop (of around f4-f8) and at the right distance. This is a nice feature for video makers as it means they can precisely control the light levels as they shoot and change the aperture without any shaking during the filming and without “jumps” in the scene light level when going from one aperture setting to another.

I used the Helios on a mirrorless Fuji X, and that was the main problem – my eyes and EVFs are not a good match, also when it comes to manual focusing. These were shot on Ilford HP5 pushed to 1600, light was fairly mixed sometimes overcast/sometimes bright. Früher hatte ich auch einen Helios 44-2, aber dieses alte Blendensystem finde ich zu umständlich, aber die Bildqualität war gut. I don’t think it’s just that they’re brighter, more that they have character plus there’s a lot less fringing/aberration on contrasting edges despite the age. That being said – its my go to lens usually paired with Zenit 12XP and nothing will make me part with it.Corner-to-corner sharpness is not that amazing but you can get some nice results in the center of the image. Despite some wobbles on the older ones, they are much more reliable, and often in better condition than many of the other vintage lenses I’ve seen – especially from the USSR.

Helios-44 is a Soviet copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm ƒ/2 lens produced under the Helios lens brand. you set that on the outer ring, then open up the aperture using the inner ring, compose, focus, then stop down the inner ring (which will stop at f/5. It is also apparently possible to use the Helios on DSLRs, but the mirror ma Side note: With Fuji it’s also possible to mount via a M42 to EF adapter + EF to FX Metabones speed booster. or smaller the problem is not noticeable anymore as the depth of field has increased so much that everything is within the depth of field from 13m to almost infinity (or around 500m) if the focus is set to 25m.makes it a wonderful choice for general purpose photography, and its surprisingly good center sharpness and subject isolation at f/2. Paul, I’ve looked at the C mount lenses on and off for years, well, since I first bought my Lumix GF1 maybe three or four years ago now.
