About this deal

The SR80x is warmer sounding than its predecessor but not overly so; the presentation is still slightly clinical but without that hardness on top that was definitely irritating on my original pair with bad recordings. Grado could have fixed this ages ago, when it introduced the salad bowls with the GS1000 but it has taken an indeviating course and told its customers to simply wash and mash the pads until they crumple with less height. Replacing the driver with a non-Grado offering has the greatest influence on the sound and character of the headphone. Popular aftermarket driver manufacturers include Symphones, Nhoord Audio and Elleven Acoustica. Symphones v8 replacement drivers 2. Shape, size and material of the ear pads

A Prayer for Lester Bowie by David Sanford Big Band was one of my top jazz releases of 2021 and a glorious recording to really test the SR80x and compare them to my budget favorite, HiFiMan HE400se headphones. Large Appliances - (Washing Machines, Dishwashers, Fridge Freezers etc). Free Local Delivery Service (Cumbria, SW Scotland and NE England*) 2-3 working days. Neben dem Grado SR80x haben wir viele weitere Hifi-Kopfhörer getestet, die wir dir in unserer Bestenliste zusammengetragen haben. I’m intrigued to try a set of drivers with no cups/shells as you suggest (something I haven’t tried) just to hear the difference, but I worry about the fragility and lifespan with such a setup – at least with my usage (although I do appreciate the Frankenstein’s monster bolt reference!). I’ve found Grados to be relatively prone to rattle (Grado ‘grattle’) due to hairs, dirt, etc finding their way onto the driver, so I’ve never been tempted to remove the grill screen in front of the driver. The pay-off for their exceptionally open and dynamically fluid delivery is one that is pretty leaky, but if you can live with the fact these are headphones best suited for quiet environments and ‘me’ time, you won’t be disappointed.Generation Grado drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the SR80x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 44mm drivers improve efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music. New Cables & Headband Both headphones deliver a wonderful degree of bite with horns and this fantastic album pushed both in regard to top end extension and clarity.

Grado speakers can reveal new notes and details in songs heard hundreds of times. The driver and housing working in tandem react to sound vibrations and virtually eliminate transient distortions. The full bodied vocals and excellent dynamics compliment the musical characteristics that are brought to light through the extreme clarity and wide range of the SR80x. Grado may never give us a cup-like cushion or one with slightly less distance between ear and driver. Right now, the best you can do is to wash and mash your way toward a smoother tonality.

The fourth generation of SR80 gets the latest X Series drivers for reduced distortion and enhanced response. Tuned specifically for the SR80x, the combination of more powerful magnets and reduced voice coil mass helps improve the headphones efficiency and speed of response. This not only reduces distortion but also improves the harmonic response, meaning the sound is closer to the original than ever. I’m purposely overlooking cables as they fall outside the purview of this article and all testing was done with standardized high-quality copper Mogami cables. 1. Driver replacement Any extended warranties offered by Peter Tyson are free. We do not include any form of insurance terms such as accidental damage or loan equipment cover. Along with the speakers, the cables and headband have been redesigned for the SR80x. Now housed in a more durable exterior, the 4-conductor cable features a super annealed copper wire for improved purity of the audio signal. The new headband features more cushion for a comfier experience. Please take all this as a second-hand impression as I have not had the opportunity to try all these cup types (and certainly not in a controlled test environment). I personally feel the differences are quite subtle between what I have tried.

Breite Bühnenabbildung mit klaren Weiten Sennheiser has the right idea with the HD800 (even if it places the driver further from the ear): No headphone needs a shell, whether it’s made of plastic, wood or aluminum. The best, tightest bass comes from an infinite baffle, which is what you have if you mount a speaker to a hole in a wall or your headphone tosses the rear shell. Your article helped me remain focused on the singular reason I started looking into Grado modding – the sound. Ultimately I spent a couple hundred dollars less in doing so and reached my objective sooner than expected AB31, AB32, AB33, AB34, AB35, AB36, AB37, AB38, AB41, AB42, AB43, AB44, AB45, AB46, AB47, AB48, AB49, AB50, AB51, AB52, AB53, AB54, AB55, AB56The SR80x headphones are where the Grado Prestige series began. Stepping up on the SR60x model, the SR80x features de-stressed drivers for a broader and more open sound. The style has stayed the same since 1991, making these headphones a true icon of headphone design. Grado has changed their driver design over the years. While the same basic driver is used for multiple models, there are driver differences throughout the current lineup, including closer driver matching on higher-end models. We find the SR80 lightweight enough to get away with the SR80e’s non-padded headband, but that’s not to say the SR80x’s padding isn’t welcome; it certainly helps maintain a less burdensome listening experience, especially during those multi-hour sessions. And while the headband slider is pretty basic, it’s fit for purpose to allow for a reasonable degree of head adjustment.

I knew the house would still be asleep so I found my favorite spot on the office sofa and curled up with a copy of American Tabloid and the Grado SR80x headphones connected to my iPhone 6S — I need both a 3.5mm and Apple Lightning connector for headphones and Dongle DACs.The SR80x had more bite but it wasn’t as refined sounding; texture and decay were definitely the strong suit of the HE400se with this particular recording. In 1996, John Grado discussed why he started using mahogany for the cups on the Grado Reference Series One headphone. “The idea of using wood just came to me one night,” explained John Grado. “We went through quite a few species of wood before finding this mahogany—which type, we’ll just keep our secret for the moment. When you’re building speakers, you’re supposed to want a dense, really hard wood—well, that’s not mahogany. But it works really well—I don’t always spend a lot of time figuring out why something works; sometimes I’m just satisfied that it does. Maybe the mahogany has a lower resonant frequency, or maybe its resonance just doesn’t emphasize something in my driver—I’m not saying it would work in all cases, but it seems to work well with our driver.” So what species of wood sounds the best? On the plus side, the SR80x are extremely comfortable; far more than any previous Grado headphone I’ve tried over the past 25 years. The moment I placed the SR80x on my large head, I braced for that tight clamping sensation that bother me about my pair of RS2s.
